“Small businesses need to blog.”” Content is King!” “Connect with your audience!” As entrepreneurs, we hear these things all the time. So we start blogging. And we blog some more. And we keep on blogging, wondering why the business isn’t pouring in.
The fact is blogging just for the sake of blogging is worthless. If you aren’t using keywords, keeping SEO in mind and promoting it, no one will notice.
I’m going to focus on Keywords in this post. You can get more information on promoting your blogs here: “How to Use a Blog as a Small Business Marketing Tool.”
According to Yola’s blog, “What are Keywords and Why are they Important?, “Keywords are very important for every business website as they drive targeted web traffic to your business for free. When done well, using the right keywords can skyrocket your business to sales success online. “
They sound pretty important don’t they?
How do you decide which keywords matter to your business and your audience?
Moz says what I always say: Do your research! Moz suggests that you, “find three to five keyword phrases to target. Why three to five? Because generally, that’s what you can reasonably expect to be able to reach with a single blog post.”
Keyword research can seem overwhelming to the average small business owner, but it doesn’t have to be rocket science. Moz does a great job of explaining some simple ways to do keyword research in their “Beginners guide to SEO/Keyword Research”.
How do you use keywords in your business blog?
Once you’ve figured out which keywords are most relevant and accessible for your business, you can begin peppering your blog posts with those keywords. Be careful not to go overboard, Google algorithms are pretty smart and will pick up on a page full of nothing but keywords. Just write as you normally would, keeping in mind the keywords you want to use and replacing generic terms for those keywords.
