What Makes You a Successful Small Business Owner? (It’s not what you think)

When’s the last time you felt successful? Or the last time you celebrated a win?

Being a small business owner is stressful.  At times, it seems that we’re putting out fires day after day. Dealing with disappointing marketing strategies,  contractors or employees who don’t deliver, demanding customers and a to-do list that has no are amazing

It’s easy to feel defeated; taking a heavy toll on our morale.  And if we don’t manage it, it can consume- and paralyze us.

I learned,  early on in my entrepreneurial career, that I had to celebrate each success; no matter how small. The huge new contract, raving Yelp or Google review from a client or wildly successful Marketing campaign just don’t come along every day – every week – or even every month. No, every big win is hard-earned.

Celebrating the small successes is crucial to maintaining your sanity as a small business owner.

Did you get 5 more followers on FB, Twitter or Instagram this week? Congratulations, that’s 5 more than probably 90% of small businesses get.

Did you deliver a proposal, quote or consultation this week?  Pat yourself on the back, I’ve worked with companies who are lucky to deliver two a year.

Did a client email you to ask your advice? Way to go! They trust you and value your opinion! That’s huge!

Did you check a thing or two off your to-do list?  With so much to do and so many distractions, it’s easy to ignore the to-do list. If you got to it today, kudos to you!

Did you wake up today and get to work for yourself? Give yourself a huge pat on the back. It’s been a long hard road and you’re still here!

I challenge you to redefine success. Instead of only acknowledging and celebrating the huge wins, find 1-3 things to celebrate and be proud of every single day. You work hard! You deserve to feel like the success that you are! Take the time to appreciate all that you do.

One of my favorite sayings is, “If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.”  Everyone isn’t doing it. Be proud!
